Inported venomous snakes are being kept as pets in the United States

American’s have developed a interest in exotic snakes as pets some of which are extremely deadly. Which is dangerous because hospitals do not have antivenin for foreign snake species.

Such was the problem when a man was recently bitten by his green mamba a extremely deadly and “illegal” snake he was keeping as a pet. Doctors had to call a local zoo who had the antivenin for green mamba bites and the man made it though alive.

Bites from non-native snakes are rare in the Untied States but are on the rises because Americans are keeping exotic poisonous snakes as pets.

In 1999 there were 31 bites from exotic snakes in the United States in 2004 there were 54 bites from exotic snakes.

The federal government does not know how many exotic venomous snakes are imported into the United States each year because there are no federal restrictions on their importation.

Snakes as pets - Sheeesh!!

Snakes and me are like the poles - distance wise. I have treated several patients of snakebites in my practice. In Kenya, where I practice medicine, snakebites are dime a dozen. Thankfully we have only 12 venomous snakes and one anti-venom covers all the twelve of them. The mamba is the deadliest of the lot. Black mamba is legendary in its own right. I would personally prefer dogs (have 3 of them!!)

Good post. Keep it up!

I prefer dogs as pets also...Snakes belong in the wild not in are homes...

Not a very good choice of pets...

I would suggest, especially if they dont have the anti-venom. I'd prefer a cat or a civilized dog myself.

I'm a dog person myself

Snakes as pets?kemo

I thought people of Japan liked to keep them. You know in India various tricks are performed using snakes. They gobble them four oe five at a time and then just throw up- just to attract people on roadsides.

You are going great guns, Kemo.
Keep it up!
Uma

Thanks Uma

Yea I've read alot about snake charming and the like in India...I find it all fasinating...

Keeping snakes as pets is dangerous.

At one time or the other my boys have kept snakes as pets hiding them away from me. Thank goodness they have now outgrown the hobby, but my garden now is full of them! But these are local snakes most are non venomous and keep the eco-balance. I do have a cobra too that visits only when the farmer sprays insecticides in the paddy. My worry is that my dog is safe as she has a habit of fighting most unwanted creepy crawlies and other tree climbing guests!

Have a nice day!
