Salwar Ban in Guruvayur Again

In Kerala, astrologers who claim to have the power to read the mind of God have said that, Lord Guruvayurappa in the famous Sree Krishna temple in Guruvayur does not like woman wearing salwar kameez or churidars. Women across the state are outraged at the astrological finding.

A group of astrologers constituted by the temple authorities to read the mind of God through a ritual called 'devaprashnam' have said that, the Lord is unhappy because women are wearing salwars and churidars to the temple.

Interestingly, this announcement comes just after the Sri Krishna temple in Guruvayour, decided to allow women inside the temple even if they were wearing salwar kurtas and churidars - where earlier they could gain entry only if they wore a saree.

The latest statement has provoked strong protests in the state. Even the Minister for Devasom has taken exception to this diktat. According to G Sudhakaran, Devaswom Minister, "These astrologers, the so called Devaprashnam people, they create problems for their own selfish ends. They create problems for themselves, the Devasom and the government. They have nothing to lose, it's only to do with a few unwanted discoveries."

The Guruvayur orthodoxy has been mired in controversy. The tradition of non-Hindus being barred entry from the temple, which was followed by the purification ceremony, conducted recently after Union Minister Vayalar Ravi's son visited the temple. The incident had blown up a huge conflict between the traditionalists and those who sought change.
