Appreciating Unity in Diversity
India is a melting point of several languages, several cultures, several castes and communities, and several rituals associated with each culture.
Somewhere down the line, a vast majority of Indians have learned to appreciate the cultural differences, and have learned to live in perfect harmony with each other.
Yet, we do hear stories of how a Tamilian is not treated so well in Bangalore, or a Kannadiga in Chennai. This is a sad news, and should never ever happen. Even as one should preserve his or her culture, when it comes to appreciating the culture of others, no effort should be spared to mingle with that culture, whatever it be -- Tamil, or Gujarathi or Marathi or the Hindiwala culture. For instance, it is a great sight to see Sardars speak excellent Tamil in Chennai -- people who have settled in this metro for decades for business. They visit temples, contribute their might to social causes, and are second to none when it comes to helping those in need. Similarly,I have seen how hard-working and helping in times of need, Keralities are --whether they are in Chennai or Bangalore or Indore or Mumbai or anywhere else. They quickly learn the knack of getting along well with others, learn the local language, and do any job that comes to them, without waiting for that "good job". For instance, in Mumbai, even today, in the senior most positions, one can find men and women from Tamil Nadu or Kerala, who have joined as typists or stenographers, and worked all their way up. They would have earned their reputation through honesty, integrity, and reliability. They would speak Marathi with as ease as a Mumbai person would.
So, wherever we are, let us try to appreciate the best in human beings, in the local culture, and live a happy life. There is a lot of traffic from the North to the South and vice versa, thanks to the BPO and the IT revolution. This is a welcome trend, and this encouraged a need breed of young professionals to learn about each other, to interact with each other, and sometimes, even become life partners. Only one small catch here. The bond that develops between people should be based on mutual trust, and real affection. Otherwise, the marriage could land both the husband and wife in trouble.
So, as Indians, let us learn to appreciate the new reality of a great deal of melting of various cultures that is already taking place. Let us seek more harmony, so that selfish politicians cannot exploit any of our weaknesses. If we appreciate unity in diversity, it will be the greatest contribution that we would be making to our families, and to the Indian society in general.

Our campus is also a best example of unity in diversity!
Isn't it siva? I enjoyed visiting your articles, now i will be there reguylarly.
Unity in Diversity
Well, very much Vaishali. Thank you so much. I agree with you. For example, I worked with the prestigious Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, several years ago, in the early eighties, as a member of the research team. It was a challenging joh, and a great one at that. It was here that I learned to appreciate a great amount of diveristy among Indians, who were students, and also colleagues in office. It is the best MBA college in Asia, but that is only part of the story. The people interact with each other, with a greatest respect for one's background, education, cultural values and such other things. One can easily see that people of India will always remain united, wherever they are, and whatever they are. It was a great living experience. Am sure, you would have also had such great experiences.
Siva, you write very well!
Disharmony in cultural diversity yield seed for dissention. In the wake of globalization we should recognise human beings as one and not catergorise ourselves to being superior in class, creed, race or otherwise.
Have a happy day!

Unity in diversity
I agree with u,since the disharmony is there, there is some scope for dissent, which at times, snowballs into a bitter conflict. Hence, it is always better to appreciate the unique features of different cultures and learn to live together as citizens of this unique country, at all times to come.
Great Article again Sivakumar Sir
Unity in diversity indeed.Do you know Padmini is from Karnataka? And she is a great human being. When I was in North India especially in J&K state I found that people had great liking for Tamilians calling them "Madrasis".I really enjoyed their friendship. So was the case in New Delhi too.
Tamilians are respected everywhere at least wherever I went.
Thanks for sharing this article!

Thank you so much Uma. Yes, this is precisely what I have also said in my article. The more we become complex, the more we should become close to one another, irrespective of where we hail from. Iam glad you found the article great.
One more thing Madam. The point that I have stressed throughout in my article does and will hold good for all time to come -- out tolerance of different cultures will make us great and live in perfect harmony with one another.

unity in diversity
Thank you so much for your appreciation. Iam glad you found it informative. This is one subject am passionate about, as it involves the entire country, and our giving importance to tolerance. I guess we need to be aware of the dangers of not being tolerant of different cultures, different traditions, even when we try to preserve our own identities in terms of our background.
We can be proud siva kumar

Unity in diversity
Thank you so much. Yes, there is a huge diversity here in India, and it is but natural that we should learn to live it, appreciate it and build on that unity. Tolerance of different cultures is one way of doing it, and making one a multi-dimensional personality as well.
