What makes a person great?

padmini's picture

One day I asked my under graduate class –how many of you know the names of your grand parents? A whooping 100% hands went up and when I again asked the names of great grandparents a marginal 20% hands went up very hesitantly and when I asked the generation before that? No hands went up.
Then I asked them –who is Newton? Who is Sri.Aurobindo? Who is Shanakaracharya? Who is Jesus? Who is Guru Govinda singh ?
Most of my students answered them. So then the question is- are these people more important to you than your own family? Why is it that your parents and teachers taught these names and not the names of your ancestors?
What made these people great? Or rather greater than your family? The students thought that –the above people had given more to the society than their family members and had lived for others. People who make more money or get famous are considered great and there were many such answers. What do you think?
Here is one quote, which I liked and share it before I, end-
Learning gives creativity, creativity leads to thinking, thinking provides knowledge and knowledge makes you great.

Great Article Padmini

really you have come up with such one that needs a standing ovation. It is true that many of us don't know about our great grandparents. If we take interest in knowing them I think we can learn a lot about worldly affairs.

Really a great one!
Keep it up!

Whoa! Now you have 10 votes

Whoa! Now you have 10 votes as I was informed just now when I tried voting for this article. I thought that I had innumerable number of votes and was happily voting those that deserved my precious votes.

I am very glad you brought this up in an article as it is very important to know your origins. We have maintained our records in a holy book that has been passed down to us from generation to generation and our eldest son who will have it, is already making sure of all details being recorded of the families (fortunately not many)in it. One is quite old and traces back to the 16th Century. He has even made a copy of it all and saved it in cyber space!

I have always encouraged people to do this. Some young people don't give much importance to this.

Have a nice day

Cheers
Always,
