Tryst with destiny – did Yama look at you?

Once upon a time, the gods had a conference and all of them started arriving. Lord Vishnu wanted to be one among the first to arrive and he came and his vehicle perched high on a huge tree and started looking around to amuse himself until his master came back. For all conferences doctors or any other professionals come in their own vehicles. Sometimes it is not just for your conveyance it is also a statue symbol. And surprisingly look at the God’s they too have their own vehicles-yes you are right-Lord Ganesh has his mouse, his brother –uses a peacock and Lord Vishnu has a garuda (a kite like bird) and lord Yama has a buffalo, the list goes on.
When yama, the lord of death arrived his vehicle was parked just below the huge tree that the garuda was perched. And lord Yama looked up at some thing in the lower branches of the tree and had a surprised look on his face and Yama’s neck lifted up and saw the garuda and seeing the garuda lord of death had a knowing grin and looked amused. This change of expressions on Yama’s face was not missed by the garuda.
The lords started coming and the conference started in real earnest. And it ended by late evening.
The garuda had come back after doing a very important job. It is said that if lord Yama looks at you then it means you are nearing death. A dove sitting in the lower branches of the tree was directly in the visual pathway of lord Yama. So the very vigilant garuda had watched Yama’s glance going up to the dove. The garuda who felt proud for being selected to be lord Vishnu’s vehicle thought that he would try to save the poor little dove so as soon as Yama left the dove was put on the garuda’s back and it flew like never before and traveled 1000 miles and put the dove safely on a tree and flew back.
And when the conference was over for the day all the gods came out and Yama came to get his vehicle and saw garuda and gave that all knowing smile. So garuda asked the reason for such a smile. Lord of death said-today morning when I saw the little dove here I was totally surprised as it had death 1000 away and then I saw you perched high above and I immediately realized that you would do the needful and you did it. The garuda was ashamed at its behavior. The vehicle of lord Vishnu does not make him greater than his lord. After hearing this story do you realize that each pone of us a have purpose in life and until l it is done we have to be.
It was a funny looking simple man who recited this story. And I liked it much so here I write it in my own words, just for who have lost a dear or near one or for whom life and death are fascinating topics.
