Bamboos
These are plants of enormous importance to rural people in most regions of the world. The greatest use is in the South and Southeast of Asia. Its uses are so great in number that it is difficult to imagine what the people in Asia would do with bamboo.

Its uses range from construction of houses, roofing, scaffolding, ladders, tats, mats, baskets, ornaments and handicrafts, musical instruments, furniture, cooking pots and containers, lamp shades, paper, tool handles, pipes, toys, fuel, food and animal feed. But that’s not the end of the list. Throughout India and China, practically every inhabitant has used bamboo at some stage in their lives.

I remember my father who was always a very controversial person used bamboo to construct a multi-level structure to house thousands of poultry within a limited floor space and it worked! This structure lasted many, many years and was very cost effective to build.

Bamboos are also grown to combat soil erosion on the banks of rivers. The uses of bamboo are numerous, yet their are lots that need to be done in research and taxonomy.
