•Dog’s teeth are kept healthy and white by allowing them to gnaw on long or marrow bones – never rib or spinal bones, or chicken or fish.

•Keep dog’s claws short by walking them on pavements or hard rough surfaces.

•Vacuuming dogs with the nozzle of a suction cleaner is fine for moulting dogs and saves vacuuming everything else later.

•A very young puppy can be kept quiet and content in its basket if it has a loudly ticking clock for company.

•Make dog biscuits from stale crusts, preferably brown bread, cut in cubes, place in a tray at the bottom of the oven till baked hard. Mixed with chopped up chicken skins, etc. will add flavour and provide extra protein.

•Rinse out the remains from all milk bottles and use as a dog’s drink.

•Grass is a natural ‘medicine’ to dogs, so allow them to follow their instinct.

•The back of a hand hung loosely to be sniffed is more often acceptable to a shy dog than an outstretched palm.

•Layers of newspaper cut to the shape of the base of the bird’s cage are an alternative to sand on paper for caged birds. The soiled sheet can be folded over and removed.

•Small birds are encouraged to your bird-tray by crumbs from the toaster rather than large pieces of bread.

•A solitary caged bird may pine and die. A ‘friend’ is easily provided if a small mirror is hung in the cage. Bells, swings and other toys are also welcome.

•A bird-tray or strings of nuts outside the window of a house bound invalid will provide a constant source of interest.

•Dry grass cuttings or crisp dry leaves provide good bedding for rabbits and other pets.
