Do You know why you should drink pasteurised milk?
Milk contains bacteris. Many of the bacteria are harmless but some can endanger health. So milk is 'pasteurised' before it is sold.
The French Scientist Louis Pasteur studied the effects of bacteria. The process we use today to purify milk is named 'pasteurisation' in his honour.
Milk is heated to a temperature of 62 degree Celsius, and then maintained at that temperature for half an hour. This kills most of the bacteria which cause milk to go sour or which can produce diseases.
The temperature of 62 degree Celcius is chosen because it is the lowest temperature that can kill the bacteria which causes tuberculosis. If the temperature rises too much above this, the taste of the milk is affected. Before this process was discovered, thousands of people used to die of tuberculosis.
Pasteurised milk is safer than ordinary milk, especially for babies. In many countries, you cannot buy or sell any milk which has not been subject to this process.
