Australia is the smallest continent in the World. In fact it is an island continent. It is the sixth largest country in the world. The word Australia means southern in Latin. The official name of the country is the Commonwealth of Australia.
Captain James Cook of Britain discovered it in 1770. But the aborigines arrived in Australia at least 45,000 years ago. During the 19th century many Britons arrived and settled there. In 1901 Australia became a self governing country. But even now the British monarch remains the Head of the State.
Canberra is the capital of the country. The largest city, Sidney, hosted the 2000 summer Olympics. Australia lies in between Indian Ocean and South Pacific Ocean. There are a few isolated cities in Australia; they are Perth in South-West coast corner and Darwin in the tropical North. Melbourne lies in the South-East side. The city hosted the 2006 Commonwealth Games. Bass Strait separates Australia from Tasmania, which is an island south of Australia. Tasmania is a part of Australia.
The western half of Australia is mostly desert. Australian Dollar is the currency of the island country. Australia is known as the "Land of Fleece" (Fleece is the wool of sheep). It is the largest producer of wool in the world. Australia is also known as the "Land of Kangaroos". Kolas, Platypus and wombat are the other unusual animals that live in Australia.
Boomerang is the weapon used by the Australian aborigines for hunting. Australia is often referred to as down under because it lies entirely in Southern Hemisphere.
Australia and New Zealand are the countries which celebrate Christmas during summer season. Australia is a federation of states. It has six states, each with its own government. They are New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, and Western Australia. The major rivers of Australia are the Murry and the Darling
