FIRST WORLD WAR (1914-1918)

The murder of Archduke Ferdinand of Austria was the immediate cause of the outbreak of the First World War (1914-1918). Main combatants in the war were the Central Powers (Germany, Austria, Hungary, Turkey & Bulgaria ) and the Allied Powers (England, France, Belgium, Serbia, and Russia). The Central Powers lost the war. The war ended with the Treaty of Versailles in 1919. (Versailles is a city near Paris). The Treaty of Versailles (1919) was signed after the First World War to weaken and degrade Germany, which was defeated in the War.

The League of Nations was formed in 1919. Its aim was to prevent further wars. It was disbanded in 1945 and was replaced by the United Nations. The First World War started in the year, 1914. The war ended in 1918. The immediate cause of the First World War was the assassination of the Archduke Ferdinand of Austria and his wife Sofia on June 28, 1914. On July 28, 1914 Austria and Hungary declared war against Serbia.

An armistice was signed on November 11, 1918 to end the First World War. It was followed by a peace conference at Paris and the Treaty of Versailles.
