Mark Twain

Samuel Langhorne Clemens was born on November 30,1835 in Florida, Missouri. The family moved to Hannibal in the same state, on the West bank of the Mississippi river, when Clemens was four years old. Since his father died even before the boy was thirteen, he had to take up some profession. Among other jobs, he became a steam boat pilot and immensely enjoyed that job. During that period he complete the stupendous task of learning the twelve hundred miles of the Mississippi River between, St.Louis and New Orleans. Then he travelled extensively; collecting various experiences about the Western life.

Clemens started writing humorous sketches and stories adopting the pen name Mark Twain, which is actually a call given by the navigators of the Mississippi on the measurement of the depth of the water. Starting from 1865,Twain published his famous works one after the other. ‘The innocents Alenad’, ‘The Gilded Age’, ‘Tom Sawyer’, ‘A Tramp Abroad’, ‘The Prince and the pauper’, ‘Life on the Mississippi’, ‘Huckleberry Finn’, ‘A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court’ etc. Even though literary fame came to him from those books and the lecture tours he had undertaken his family life, was filled with some tragic events. When Mark Twain died on April 21, 1910 he was a bitter man who, resented much of the arrows from an outrageous fortune.
