presence of mind

padmini's picture

Once I was going to my native place. As I am a nature lover, I decided to go by train, so that I can enjoy the scenery. I could see many red flowers, which are known as May flower as they are always seen in the month of may, and besides them there were many yellow blossoms which were shining in the sunlight. Like gold and rightly they are known as gulmohar. To compete with there were pretty pink stud like flowers on the rain tree. Really, it was a feast for the eyes. And as I traveled further, I felt as though the trees and the electric poles were all coming along with me. I was fortunate enough to spot some rare species of birds also. There were many minas, which were a noisy lot. Kingfishers were shaking their heads as though they were showing off their rich shiny blue plumes. As it was a rainy season, it suddenly became cloudy, so once again I was lucky to spot beautiful peacocks, which were dancing proudly showing off their lovely feathers, which are like icons. As the train was moving slowly I came to know that some village station was nearing and the train would stop for the people to alight and board.

As expected the train stopped with a jerk. So I decided to watch the people who were getting out and coming inside the train. There were all sorts of people, old and young,

men and women and some were alone with lots of luggage packed in an irregular fashion. As I was watching the people hurriedly coming to board the train, I saw a lady trying to get inside the compartment. When I saw her I suddenly remembered the famous saying “Less luggage, more comfort.” But I felt that, that the lady had forgotten the saying as she had a lot of things which were packed shabbily, that the lady could hardly manage to carry them and at the same time board the train which was about to move in a second. As she was a hefty person, she was only able to put one foot of hers on the footboard then suddenly the train moved, she could neither get down nor climb up the train with all her belongings. At once, I saw a gentleman, may be in his fifties pounced to the other side of the train, as he was seated in the corner of the bogie, held her hand and pulled her up inside the train. The lady I think had missed a heart beat, as she could not talk for a while, but then she thanked profusely that gentleman saying that he not only saved one life but two, then I noticed that she was a pregnant lady.

After that, I turned to the gentleman, who is the hero of the incident, who had the presence of mind to do such a heroic act and enquired him how he could do so in a fraction of a second.

For that he said that he is a gymnast so he was able to jump so far and pull her up inside the train.

So I said that he is not only a gymnast, but also a philanthropist too.
