Coimbatore: The Emerging Metro
Coimbatore, the second largest and the most important city of Tamil Nadu, is one of the fastest growing cities of India, and as well become a metro having a population of over fifty lakhs within the next six years.
Coimbatore is already a famous destination for both the IT and the IT enabled sectors. The Tamil Nadu government is now promoting a Tidel Park, similar to the one that is already there in Chennai. This is expected to bring in an additional manpower base of al least one lakh through formal employment, and another three lakh through the already booming service sector. One of the good things about Coimabatore is its salubrious climate. For just two months in a year, the maximum temperature touches 40 degrees, and in most of the year, the average temp is as low as just 25 degrees. It is often called the poor man's Ooty, which is just around two hours drive from Coimbatore. However, Coimbatore has always been a costly city, as people out here really like to earn, spend and enjoy.
Coimbatore to home to the world-class Anna University, which now has a branch in Coimbatore. Apart from this, it also has the Bharathidasan University, the Avanashilingam Home Science Deemed University for Women, and a couple of other Deemed Universities. Its school network is excellent, and some of the best schools are situated here. Coimbatore has the largest number of entrepreneurs manufacturing wet-grinders of all kinds that now are part of any kitchen anywhere in India, and in several parts of the world.
Excellent manufacturing facilities for a very wide range of auto components is available in the organized Corporate Sector. Coimbatore has been rated high in surveys that have been conducted by Business Today, for doing business in India. Its airport is now bursting at its seems, and there is already talk about a new aiport that will cater to international traffic. A direct service to Sharjah has just been launched.
In Coimbatore,it is quite difficult to find beggars, which is a nuisance in several other cities of Tamil Nadu. The reason is that people out here are so hard-working, like to just talk business and do business. In fact, the largest number of individual entrepreneurs is quite likely to be found in Coimbatore, where every family has some business or the other. In fact, women in this city hate to be idle. They often supplement their income through part-time work, or through some work that they can do from home. It has two excellent temples in places called Maruthamalai and in Perur. Coimbatore is blessed with drinking water that comes from the Siruvani river. This water is the sweetest that one can ever find in any part of India.
Coimbatore has direct daily trains to New Delhi, Chennai, Trivandrum, Mangalore, Mumbai, Kolkatta, and literally every other city of India. Since it is on the Kerala border, hundreds of thousands of Keralites have made it their home. So have quite a large number of business families from Gujarat and Rajasthan. In fact, there is a weekly direct train to Rajkot. There are several flights to different cities in India.
If you happen to work in the Corporate Sector, and are looking for a change, think about Coimbatore. Once you reach there, you are bound to settle down there -- in a place, that every one is now recognizing, has the potential to become India's second Bangalore!!
