KootuCurry
A kerala delicacy – easy to make n good combo with rice and sambhar.
Ingredients:
Yam 250gms
Raw Banana 250 gms
Brown Chana 100gms
Jaggery (gudd) 10gms
Coconut 1 in no.(grated)
Black pepper 8-12 in no.s
Red Chilli (dry) 2- 3 in no.s
Mustard seeds 1tspn
Chilli Powder ¼ tsp
Turmeric powder ¼ tspn
Jeera ¼ tspn
Small (sambhar) Onions 3-5in no.s
Coconut oil 2-3 tbspn
Curry leaves to garnish
Salt to taste
Method:
Soak the brown Chana overnight. Clean the Yam, raw banana in water and cut into square pieces of 3cms. Cook in small volume of water the cut pieces of yam, raw banana and brown chana with salt, turmeric powder and red chilli powder under pressure with (1 whistle only). Take 1/4th of the grated coconut along with sambhar onions and jeera and grind slightly. Add this semi-ground paste of coconut to the cooked mixture and stir well till cooked. Keep aside In a kadai add coconut oil and sauté the remaining coconut along with dry red chilli curry leaves and mustard seeds till golden brown in colour. Add the mixture we kept aside to this sauted coconut. Remove from flame. Now grind black pepper and grate jaggery to the hot mixture and mix well. Close with a lid for sometime. Serve with Rice and sambhar.

yes dear, i have tried it and it is an essential part of (sadhyaa)vegetarian meal served on onam. it is said that the sadhyaa is incomplete if it doesnt contain a KootuCurry n Payasam.
i bet you ll be licking your fingers off.
