TOOLS, THEIR USE & CARE

These are tools that were in use no so long ago.

Awl: in several varieties for piercing, to make holes for nails or screws.

Brace & Bit : For boring holes. Store bits in case.

Auger Bit: used in woodworking. Twist bits to make holes for nails and screws. Sizes for each 32nd of an inch.
Foerstner bit is used on thin woods. Sizes for each 1/16th inch.

Expanding bit: used to cut holes of various sizes.
Countersunk bits are used to widen screw holes to allow screws to go below the surface..

Chisels: sharp, narrow-bladed knives for carving, notching, leveling, etc. Cold chisels are used for work on stone or metal. They are made from hardened silicon manganese steel. In ¼ inch sizes, flat or circular. Keep sharp with oil stone. Protect sharpness of blade. A ¼ and 7/8 inch are most used for household work.

Clamps: used to hold two pieces of wood together while glue hardens.

Calipers: used to measure inside or outside of small areas.

Drills : operate like an egg beater to make small holes. In 1/64 inch sizes. Some have breast plates so that they may be steadied on the body. Push drills are less expensive, work well for small jobs.

Files: Available in various sizes, shapes, and coarseness. Most used are flat, half round, round. Clean frequently with wire brush. Remove remaining cuttings with soft metal pin. Used to finish and shape wood and metals.

Gouges: chisels with curved blades, used to cut channels in wood.

Gimlets: long bits 18 to 24 inches long used to bore holes through thick boards and planks.

Glass cutter: diamond-chip edged tool for cutting glass.

Grindstone: carborundum wheel to sharpen knives, chisels, axes, etc. Handle with care; they break easily.
