A small step but a big leap for Environment

Everyone is talking about Environment nowadays. the media both print and electronic is agog with good and sometimes exaggerted stories. However it is time for all of us to sit up and do a bit towards the Environment which we are bequeathing to our own children.
We shall make a small but very very significant contribution to environment. We shall make this happen by these simple steps.
1. We go round our own house and jot down the number of lights, the tube lights and the yellow coloured incandascent lamps(the wattage of each lamp could also be incorporated)
2. Wherever we have installed a 40 watt Tube(Flourscent)lamp,
we shall clean the tube regularly with a damp cloth to ensure maximum light output.
3. Wherever we have a 40 watt incandascent lamp, remove the same and install a 8 watt Compact Flouroscnt Lamp.(CFL)
4.Wherever we have 60 watt and 100 watt incandascnt lamps, we should promptly install 22 watt CFLs.
Now we shall look at what we have achieved by doing this exercise.
A. Economic Sense :Even though we shall be making an additional investment we shall be saving an average of Rs. 391 on usage of the new CFLs per annum. The additional amount invested is recovered within a short period. The average working age of a CFL is 5 to 8 years. Some companies replace your CFLs in case of premature failure. There is also a proposal to reduce the prices to Rs. 10 to Rs. 15.
B.Ecology wise: When we use the incandascent lamps we get heat out of the lamp because these lamps give out light due to heating of a filament. The major portion of the power consumed goes into this heating. This leads to loss of power and increase in the ambient temperature.
C.Winners we shall be: Comparision with the incandascent lamp makes the CFL and us as winners. Just the follwing figure shall give an idea.
I.Life of Bulb: An incandascent bulb has a life of 750 hours where as a CFL has a life of 10,000 hours. How is it for economy ???
II.Lumens produced: An incandascent lamp produces 690 lumens considering 100 watts and a CFL produces 1500 lumens considering just 23 watts
considerable savings.
III. Bulbs needed: About 6 bulbs are required over a period of 3 years in case of incandascent lamps and just one CFL over a period of 6 years and 8 months.
If each of us can do this little exercise we not only save money on the power we consume but save money for the nation.
Reduce the heat produced thus contributing towards a cleaner environment.
When a small colony in New Delhi changed to CFLs , they saved a whopping 50 mwatts of power. Just inmagine how much power can be saved if our entire country converts to CFLs.
