BLUMPO, THE FRIENDLY ELEPHANT (A SERIES)

BLUMPO GOES SHOPPING
“Blumpo honey, get out of bed”, said mother on a bright Sunday morning, “you need to get me some bread and muffins for breakfast”. Blumpo woke up smiling, as he loved to go out shopping!

Screaming in glee he ran off to shower and brush. He wanted to look very tidy at the market place. Mrs. Tidings, his teacher had once said, cleanliness speaks of who we are and Blumpo wanted to look his best.

Stepping out for shopping with a basket in one hand Blumpo walked with great pride swinging the coins as high as he could and catching them in the basket his mother had given. He wanted everyone around him to see what an important job he had stepped out for.

“Watch out buddy, you might lose some coins there,” said Uncle Twain seeing Blumpo play with them, but Blumpo paid no heed. He went on walking and playing with the coins enjoying the sound of them jingling as they fell into the basket. “A one, a two, a three, a four and a five”, he counted when they fell in.

Ted, Diggle and Wiggle seeing him across the road joined him. “Blumpo, wait, wait for us” shouted Ted and Blumpo soon had his friends by his side and felt happier. He had heard of Wiggle having carelessly lost some money when his mom had once sent him for a job. But nope, this wasn’t Blumpo! He was far too responsible to ever act so foolishly. And together they walked down to the market with Blumpo busily throwing the coins up in the air.

“ Be careful Blumpo you just might lose the coins”, said Diggle “It was pretty silly of me to have done the same and then gone home to mom with a sorry face. I think you should be careful.” “ Don’t you worry Diggle”, said Blumpo all smiling. “I’ve practiced this often before. Watch me now. A one, two, three, four and a …a …a, where is the fifth? Saying this Blumpo stopped. There was a loud silence, which was then followed by a huge elephant cry. Blumpo couldn’t help wailing out loud. He grew louder and louder as he cried, “ My mommy would be very cross and never ask me to help her ever again. Oh! Why did I not listen to you Diggle?” he sniffed.

Just then Uncle Twain came by and seeing the commotion he stopped to ask how the happy little Blumpo had turned a crybaby. And even before he’d reached the spot he knew just why. “Aha! Blumpo, you lost some money, did you?” asked he. “Yes, Uncle Twain and I have to buy mommy some bread and fruits… Oh! What do I do?” cried Blumpo sounding even louder than before.

“Relax…relax little fella and listen to what I say. There is always a first time and we cannot be perfect. But, you must learn to look after things, as you get older. Especially when someone entrusts you with responsibility. Being careless only leads to what’s happened now,” said Uncle Twain. Saying this Uncle Twain reached into his pocket for a coin and gave it to Blumpo. “Son, I know how you feel and knowing you am certain this will never happen again. Go on with the shopping and don’t worry.”

Blumpo wiped his tears and thanked Uncle Twain with a big grin. Wiggle looked more pleased now that the noise had subsided and all seemed to be fine. The four friends went shopping together and went home with all the goodies Blumpo’s mother had asked for.

On seeing her standing at the door Blumpo ran to hug his mother and began to tell her about the money he lost with tear filled eyes when she suddenly hugged him and said, “I know all about it Blumpo. I’m glad you feel sorry. Uncle Twain just got home and told me all about it.”

Just then Uncle Twain stepped out and smiled. “Blumpo, we know you are a good child and are certain that you will never be careless ever again”, said he. Mama treated them all to a yummy breakfast that morning. “ I love you, mom”, said Blumpo munching at his favorite sandwich as he sat on the rug playing and giggling with his friends.
