E.E.CUMMINGS

Edward Estlin Cummings (1894-1962) was born on 14, October, 1894 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. His father Edward Cummings was a professor of English at Harvard University, besides being a pastor in Boston. The poet had his education at Harvard from where he took his B.A and M.A degree. After completing his education in 1916, he had to go through a humiliating experience of being detained in a French camp under a false charge of having indulged in treasonable correspondence during World War I. Thereafter he became the leader of the avant-garde in New York.
His first literary work was" The Enormous Room" in which he gave an account of his unpleasant experiences in the French detention camp. Among his other works are "Tulips and Chimneys"(1923) . "No Thanks"(1935) collections of his poems published under the title "Collected Poems" (1938), "IXI" (1944) "Poems"(1954), and "95 Poems" (1958). His lectures at Harvard University were published as "Six Nonlectures"(1953).
