OBAMANIA!!
The most interesting, mindblowing and earthshaking (literally, worldwide)news of this year (perhaps century!!) has been the election of Barack Obama as the President of the USA. I was following the election closely and even created my own account on his website barackobama.com. Though all the exit polls predicted an Obama victory, there was still a lingering uncertainty about the final result. Would the Americans really, really vote a black man to power? Would they be able to transcend, go beyond centuries of prejudice and preconceived notions to bring to the most powerful position in world politics, a man of mixed descent? Yes, they did.
It was amazing both the man and his message. The victory speech by Obama at Chicago was an incredible one, which moved people to tears. His slow, almost musical style of speech rendered every word clear and audible and woke a nation to blissful celebration. In fact, it was an astonishing fact that there were celebrations all over the world and this was certainly a first for an US president.
You may well ask me why I am waxing eloquent over the election of a head of state of a foreign country. What is it to us anyway who got elected in the USA? Does it really matter? Yes, it does, very much. The USA whether we like it or not is the most powerful country in the world today and with the demise of the "cold war", the ONLY one. The President of the USA is the one man who has the power to change not just the destiny of his own country, but also that of other countries around the world. His policies and decisions will echo around the globle with ripple effects in practically every region. As Bush has shown this can be disastrous and certainly, the opposite could also be true if the man at the helm of affairs is intelligent, reasonable, unifying and dare we say it....sensitive. And I for one, do believe that President-elect Barack Obama embodies these qualities. The world can only become a better place, as I think it is safe in his hands.
