From a Reader's Desk: How to Write A Good and Interesting Article

I am not a writing expert nor do I pretend to be one. My experience in writing is limited to straight news writing for print and broadcast media during my previous employment at a government media organization. And at present I am a correspondent for our office newsletter.

Also, I am very new to this thing called website logging, more popularly known as blogging. But I love reading and I do read a lot about everything my hands can get hold of. That’s why I can identify one interesting write-up from another.

I am giving these suggestions from a point of view of a reader. And since I am a newbie in this kind of thing, I wrote this to improve my own blogging skills and for the benefit of others who are new writers too.

Write for a Particular Audience One at a Time

Be specific as to the kind of readers you would like to reach. Focus on a particular group (e.g. students, moms, dads, businessmen, etc.) so you can pick out a subject matter that interests everybody in the group.

To make your writing enjoyable, choose an audience that you can best relate to. To draw more readerships, write for a group with the most number of blog browsers. Who do you think spend more time reading blogs? They’re bloggers like you.

Write About Topics of Interest and with Universal Appeal

If you already have a particular group of readers in mind, you can now choose a topic that you think will interest them most including yourself. Pick out also a topic in which you have a personal knowledge about. Writing becomes spontaneous if you have an experience about a subject matter and your article will be lively and interesting to read.

Make your Article Easy and Enjoyable to Read

Use plain and simple words (for the sake of non-English speaking readers) so your message will be understood easily. Construct sentences in such a way that they don’t sound “rigid”. Inject life into your writing. I still have to learn how this can be done.

There is this author whose books I really enjoy because while reading, it’s as if he’s just telling me a story. And there is another writer whose article I couldn’t understand in just one reading. Few readers will enjoy and will want to read such kind of article.

Satisfy Your Readers

Don’t leave your readers hanging. Unless you’re writing a series, make sure that the body of your article answers or describes what your title says. Satisfy your readers with complete information.

Be Conscious with Spelling, Grammar and Punctuations

This is very important. Correct spelling, grammar and punctuations are essentials of a good and interesting article. The opposite will spoil it no matter how good your content is. Edit and reread your article until you’re sure there are no more mistakes.
