WiMax and LTE – Are they the same?
The availability of new types of multimedia content and applications through the Internet and the need to stay connected and also be entertained, are creating an increased demand for robust mobile broadband environments. Subsequently, service providers need advanced data transport techniques that can easily meet these demands. And many operators are considering Mobile WiMAX or LTE as the key ingredient to further build their broadband access networks.
WiMAX and LTE, as few claim, are similar in many aspects. The LTE, SAE gateway performs the same operation as the CSN gateway in WiMAX. Even the PDN gateway in LTE has quite similar tasks or performs the same operations as an ASN gateway in any WiMAX network. Both networks have similar scheduling and QoS models. These are just a few aspects, among many, compared or listed between these two networks.
PDN gateway functions in a LTE network include policy enforcement and packet screening. It also acts as a mobility anchor for mobility between 3GPP access systems and non-3GPP access systems and also filters per-user based packets. Apart from allocating UE IP addresses, it also supports lawful interception.
