THE HAIR BRUSH

THE HAIR BRUSH
Brushing is one of the best and easiest ways to keep hair healthy and beautiful. It speeds up blood circulation as it stimulates each hair follicle, absorbs oxygen and nutrients to keep it healthy. However, just as anything done in excess is bound to produce adverse results, so too, over brushing causes hair to break. That is where the importance of a `hairbrush', as well as its selection and care, comes in for critical attention.
Selection of a hair brush depends not only on your budget, but also on the texture of your hair and the condition of your scalp. A brush with a rounded or semi-cylindrical shape and rounded bristles which are not uniform in length, is good for general use. Sharp bristles should be avoided as they tend to rotate the scalp and pull the hair, thus causing split ends.
Natural Bristle is perhaps the most expensive hairbrush. It generally has a rubber base that helps reduce the static electricity generated during brushing. It is very good for fine hair and a sensitive scalp as it does not pull the hair. Hard natural bristle is suitable for any texture. It can safely be used on treated hair. Such a brush lasts a long time.
Nylon Bristle is not very expensive. It is good for hair of any texture, but should be avoided on a sensitive scalp. It can be safely used on wet hair without causing breakage of the hair.
Plastic Bristle helps untangle wet or dry hair without pulling. It is used mainly during blow-drying as it helps give a smoother look. It is also easy to clean. Mixed Bristle is a combination of nylon and natural bristle. It is excellent for brushing thick hair.
A Vent Brush is made of plastic with 7 rows of teeth. It is well known as an `air brush'. It is ideal for brushing wavy or curly hair, permanent waved hair, and thick or coarse hair.
Selecting the right brush is important but what is equally important is brush care. Always keep your brush scrupulously clean. If you use a dirty brush, you are adding dirt to clean hair.
The simplest way to keep your brush clean is to soak it for a few minutes in warm soapy water. Do not use hot water. Avoid soaking the brush overnight as this will damage the brush, since the bristles will loosen out. Having soaked the brush for a short time, clean it row-wise with the help of an old tooth brush. Now, be careful while drying the brush. Dry it with the bristles facing downwards so that the water drains off and does not accumulate at the base. Accumulated water can also loosen bristles.
The right way to brush your hair is to bend forward at the waist, hold the head down and brush away from the scalp. Start at the nape of your neck and slowly work your way towards the front. This will not harm your hairline.
Though you can brush your hair at any time of the day, there are certain times during the day when your hair can benefit more from brushing. If you brush your hair in the morning, you help the circulation of the blood. The ideal time for brushing your hair is at night. Always smoothen your hair before sleeping. Never sleep with pins or rubber bands in your hair. And finally, it is a must to brush-shampoo your hair mildly to free it of all tangles. You will thus avoid breakage of hair when you brush it or comb it after washing it.
