letters from iwo jima

Last night I was watching a movie titled “Letters from Iwo Jima”. Basically I was interested in this movie because one of my favorite Japanese actors starred in it (Ninomiya Kazunari).

The story setting was at a war. (In my own opinion) the story was about the mission of America to invade Japan (for some reasons I don’t know). It happened sometime between 1900 to 1944.

As I watch the movie, questions started to pop up its as if im a wandering historian.

First was what was really the significance of the war?

Were the leaders who comfortly sits at the command station thought of the lives of their soldiers and their families left behind, worrying and hoping that their sons, husbands and relatives come home safely and not wrapped in a bag or even worse not found?

Was the war bought up to showcase the different kinds of battle gear they have?

Why do natives of an invaded country have to surrender their land and identity just to be free? Why do they have to suffer from famine just to fight for freedom?

I don’t want to pin-point countries but why do they (im referring generally) have to instigate wars just to be known as powerful or rather why are they always after “power”?

These questions came unanswered. =(

Rather, the sad part of the past is that it still happens today (does history really repeat itself? Cant it be changed?)

In some parts of the world there are still wars. Invasions are not over. Even wars between natives of the same country and even wars of the same religion is still happening.

Why do officials or commanders cant get through a negotiation without wars? Are they really inhuman enough to not think of the innocent people who are stock in the middle?

Cant they find other ways of solving the problem aside from wars?

Questions about wars never cease to come up.

I hope and really do pray hard that soon wars will be over and the community (the world) would be a better place to live in. after all, in the eyes of God, we are all brothers and sisters.

To end this, I hope officials could read this simple line from the movie and really ponder on it.

“you haven’t lived enough to realize what were you sacrificing”
