Nigerians are to pay more for fuel
Nigerians will pay more for refined petroleum products from January, next year as
Government commences another phase of subsidy withdrawal from the products.
Currently, a litre of petrol costs N70, while diesel and kerosene sell for
N150 and N100 respectively.
The high cost of kerosene is most painful and regrettable as poor Nigerians
who depends on it to cook their food have turned to the forest falling any
available tree as firewood.
This, certainly is a big blow to government's effort to fight dersert
encroachment and its campaign on tree planting.
Any further slight increase will make life more unbearable for the masses
Government claimed it had so far subsidised local consumption of
the products to the tune of N700 billion, for this year alone.
It also said the withdrawal of subsidy was to make pricing competitive within
the country, to attract investment to the sector.
Increase in prices of petroleum products in Nigeria is almost becoming
a yearly ritual.
Government is never tired of advancing the same reason for the exercise but
Nigerians have not benefitted from the huge amount raked into government
coffers from previous exercises and are not likely to get anything from the
proceeds of the pending one in terms of good roads, stable power supply,
potable water, affordable education and health care.
Government does not take thought of the interface between petroleum product
prices and the prices good and services which responds swiftly to any hike.
Government is supposed to ensure the welfare of its people but ours is
to inflict hardship on us with our God given natural resources.
No to further increase.
