Of Faiths and Superstitions

Faith is something we all believe in so intensely that we are unable to contain ourselves and submit to it. There are things in life in which we have deep faith and subject our ideology to. But at times I have seen people’s immense faith taking the shape of some kind of superstitions and misbelieve. Take for instance, moon coming in between the sun and the earth. It seems to be a simple and natural phenomenon called ‘Solar Eclipse’, which occurs whenever appropriate time comes, due to the orbit of the heavenly planets.

For many it may be an auspicious omen, but it may be some kind of evil associated with it for some reasons. A few may call it a natural phenomenon and others a sacred ritual which has to be given special attention and focus in life, at least for that particular day.

Many of us believe that supernatural phenomenons and occurings like full moon night, Friday which falls on 13th day of the month, solar and lunar eclipses, volcanic eruptions and high tides of the sea to name a few, all yes all hold eternal significance. It may be the time to devout to religion and chanting of mantras and of hymns, turning the beads of sacred tulsi plant and taking ‘charnamrit’ the holy water or yet for others it may be the day for taking a holy dip in the sacred rivers like Ganges or at Kurukshetra. Yet for others it may be a simple other day of casual activity. They simply dismiss the tag of supernaturalism and superstition attached with the event. But all the same the religions and the devout have their own perceptions and beliefs which cannot be ignored.

The more defined people like believing in ‘Vastu-shastra and the ones with scientific attitudes may say that, Sun gives out positive energy, so when something blocks its rays, its negative energy starts floating around. Thus it is best to not to get exposed to such energy.

Surprisingly events like solar eclipse, are a day out for the kids, who venture out when specifically cautioned by their parents to not to do so. It is obvious, children belonging to both believers and non-believers are tough time stopping from staring at sun. Perhaps it is a scientifically proven fact that rays during a solar eclipse can cause damage to the retina and a peak can end up with thick glasses for the rest of one’s life, yet we find scores of people gazing at sun, without paying any heed to the age old advice.
