Daily Bread

The richness and prosperity of a nation can be gauzed by the per capita income of its citizens, how many people live below poverty line and how many are illiterates. People belonging to the weaker sections of the society have limited access to information, technology and literacy. Probably this is due to the darkness of ignorance, poverty and the need to meet the basic requirement that is food.

Most of the poor and downtrodden are hand to mouth. They have to struggle to survive. Each day is a new challenge for them. They earn their daily living by selling themselves in one form or the other. These economically marginalized sections of the society seldom have the opportunity to literate themselves. Thus at an early stage of their lives they are forced into the profession held by their elders. Take for e.g. the family of a carpenter, who has a very hard life. His sons also take to the profession and help the family earn a living.

Some children become rag pickers. This is one of the easiest of the works now-a-days for many, the people who do nothing else do rag-picking. Their day begins early in the morning, when the entire city is asleep. They turn their hands into the heaps of the garbage dumps, in search of something that could be sold, like paper, plastic waste, pieces of iron articles or broken crockery. It is very rarely that they get their hands on to some thing precious and priceless like, a golden guinea or a silver coin. For them garbage is their home where they live and survive upon. They too have their daily bread, although there is no butter on it.
