World War 1

Powerful weapons,
The world's great nations were all involved in this war which caused so much destruction. When in August 1914 the war began ,thousands of men,Germans,Austrians and Turks on one side;and British,Russians on the other;rushed to join the armies. This war lasted until 1918.
Powerful weapons
It only began as a local war between Austria-Hungary and Serbia when the Serbian nationalists assassinated Austrian Archduke Francis Ferdinand and his wife during the couple's official visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina on July 28,1914.Out the spirit of intense nationalism permeating in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the local war involved into a general European struggle when Germany declaredwar against Russia on August 1,1914.Eventually,it became a global ar involving 32 nations.
Both sides had guns so powerful that they could fire shells for hours on end, destroying everythihng within range. Many battles began with huge artillery 'barrages'.When the guns stopped firing, all that was a sea of mud and ruins.A single machine guns could slaughter dozens of mens in minutes.Armies could not move forward against such guns.So they dug themselves lines of trenches. The trenches protected soldiers from gunfire, but not for poison gas.
This international conflict was the first war in which men fought in the air.Pilots in light fragile planes fired at each other with pistols and machine guns. They had no parachutes,so could not escape if their planes were shot down.
Tanks were first used in 1916 by the British. The Germans were terrified to see these crawling "tin boxes"and ran away.At sea, many merchant ships were sunk by submarines, lurking unseen beneath the water.
However,Germany had subarines with torpedoes. When the British steamship Lusitania, carrying 1198 persons,wa torpedoed by a German submarine off the southern coast pf Ireland o May 7,1915,i prompted U.S. President Woodrow Wilson to ask congress for a declaration of war against Germany. The Germans believes that the ship was carrying narms for the allies(which later research proved to be true)and that Americans had been warned against taking passage on British vessels. This warning was in the morning New York newspapers on the day the ship sailed from New York City.
