Staying Calm During Storm
To stay calm in times of chaos, you have to realize nothing can come out of getting frustrated. If this seems obvious enough to you, it is not, and I can tell you of several acquaintances of mine who work themselves up into fury just to get things move fast. It's kind shaking off the lethargy one feels within oneself, piling the blame on others by insinuation and then getting them worked up, so that the work gets done fast. If this sounds like a familiar way of getting the job done for many people, rest assured, it cannot work always. And not without a lot of heartburn, and not without creating enemies.
Instead, plan ahead for those moments of crisis and chaos. If you have planned methodically, chaos itself can be averted. Morning rush hour and traffic snarls? A preventing strategy would mean starting early and choosing non-peak hours.
If chaos is inevitable, anticipating and planning ahead lets us make most of those moments. What if there's an important meeting, and let's say your flight has been delayed by several hours? First things first. Inform your office about your being stuck up. Ah, there's now the chance for reading that best-seller book for which you couldn't squeeze the required time so far, but which you carried, nevertheless, in your briefcase, 'just in case'. You could also listen to your favorite music, or even snatch time to write the to-do planner list for the day. Such activities would keep you focussed on positive aspects of the chaotic moments.
