A Home, Eco friendly? ( I )
We lived in a home five kilometre away from the municipal limits amongst the greenery on a hill slope and our house is built without disturbing the natural gradient of the hill. So the house looked like a two and a half storied one, if we can say so,as the first two floors are little above the road level, which is run along the foot of the hill. The third floors are built on the higher level, half the height of the first floor of the two storied part and the first two stories are built against retaining walls built by boulders.
We used water from the springs that appeared through the loose rocks of the hill slopes when excavations were made to sink a plinth at the higher level of the hill. We inserted a small- diametered rubber pipe into the crevices of the hill slope and water flowed down by gravity to fill a well which was dug at the site of another natural spring well. Half of our need for water was fulfilled by water coming down by gravity without electricity. The other half of our water need was fulfilled by a small pump which pump up water from the spring well used as a reservoir, into an overhead tank. Sometimes the internal routes of water were blocked by erosion of a heavy rain, the water could not come and we had to poke the walls of the hiil slope for new channels and temporarilly disconnect the rubber pipes to allow the muddy water to go away. Once the rains were over the same crystal clear water with the coolness of the unseen pervious rocks not only would soothe our senses, in fact, would sometimes send us to bed with a bad cold even in summer.
Dust and pollution could not touch us because of the greenery when we built our home some three decades ago.The asphalt road leading to a peroleum by product based power plant only left some traces of odour of the furnace oil tankers carrying them. The railway track at a distance left a trail of thick steam engine coal smoke soon to be blown away by the breeze elsewhere.. In front of our house beyond the railway track, there was a green expanse of a paddy field in winter and in the rainy summers blue green water body from the excess water from the migthty river, one of the biggest in Asia, that flow beyond the plains flood it like a lake giving us a glorious sunset.
