Safekeeping: Out of Mercy

One might find me merciful and unfair for imprisoning a female pet cat inside my room. This act of hiding the female cat from the two male cats in our household has been done for almost a week now. This does not happen once, but the second time around since my female cat "Miming" turned one-year old on September 3, 2007.

I had consulted a veterinarian since the first mating experience of Miming sometime in December 2007. I told the animal doctor that my purpose of chastising my pet and hiding her away from the males was to prevent her from multiplying, for I saw that our place is not conducive to multiplication of cat animals. Aside from that, I really pity a female cat to have not found a right hiding place for her kittens while growing up. Another thing is that I could not help kittens getting sick and dying due to sickness. Kittens are not allowed to stray in the living room, or any place inside the house for they spread feces, urine, and undesirable smell. Most of all, I think having three pet cats in the house is just enough.

So, the doctor’s advice was to keep the female cat inside the room for a period of one week or more until estrus cycle (mating period) disappears.

The mating experience is just three to four days away. I am always keeping her inside my room. At bed time, she sleeps with me inside the mosquito net. She creeps on my chest, belly, or sleeps in my side. During broad daylight, I bring her milk early in the morning, give her small amount of rice with fish on a small plate at breakfast, lunch, and supper. I also provide her fresh water everyday.

When estrus cycle ends, then I will set her free to go with other two male cats in our house. What do you think? Am I going crazy going against the law of nature? Yah! What I am doing right now is the practical side of raising pet cat animals. But, it did all these things out of mercy and preserving living creatures.

desperateman, there is nothing wrong

I feel you have been kind to the animal. Throwing away animals from their mothers is a greater sin than keeping them away from their mates and preventing unwanted pregnancies. Please keep up the good work and don't cry that you are hurting these animals.
