Birhaa :-The Ballad Of India.

satishKRT's picture

After having few big pieces of hot and delicious Litti-Chokha, we crew members were taking cool night napes in a remote Uttar Pradesh village…

Suddenly a sound of wailing awakens me from my sleep! What was it? Was some body weeping at the dead of night?”Not to worry so much!” my friend assured me, “it’s Ballad of this region”. Ballad of Eastern Uttar Pradesh and south western regions of Bihar is known as Birhaa-a traditional folk songs of love tales. Birhaa as I was informed is related to Yadav community for long. But during the periods of its glorious popularity some other cast of that region also adopted that singing profession. Interestingly, despite its growing popularity and respect in the Indian villages’ society, the upper cast people still regard this singing style as rude and boorish.

There is great Birhaa singer like Hiralal Yadav, who has nationally been recognized for his talent in Birhaa singing. There are few women singers too who are making their names and fame in this folk tradition. Some names like Poonam Yadav, Kavita Krishnamurty, Gita Tyagi and etc are popular. The word Birhaa has derived its name of a local word-Birha-means separation. So, the poetry of love and separation of two soul and mates are the generally main theme of Birhaa songs. But today we’ve modern Birhaa for us. The modern Birhaa is different form old and pure ones of yesteryears. Due to its long spell of the song and storyline, many other things could be adopted or attached along with it. The growing popularity of Birhaa is considered dangerous for pure old Birhaa and Lorik-Yet another folk singing style.
